Other types of basil include Opal, Cinnamon, Lemon, and one of my favorites, Thai Basil. Thai basil has a lovely licorice flavor that works well in many Asian style recipes, and pizza casserole. If you grow several types of basil, and intend to dry them, make sure you have a system in place to keep them separated, contained and labeled. Dried, all these leaves look very similar. Mistaking cinnamon for lemon could give your roasted chicken an unpleasant flavor.
Basil is an herbal staple, and I grow Sweet and Lemon Basils, as well as Thai. These three cover the recipes I use, and their flavors hold up well when the leaves are dried. It is one of my seven essential herbs – parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, basil, oregano, and dill. They all dry well, store well, and meet any herbal need I may encounter in my kitchen.
